A.N.: I wrote this for/about my sister when she was reading English short stories for school and seemed to develop a hatred against all short stories...Comments are of course appreciated!
There once was a girl who was in her last school term. In the morning, she got up at six, got dressed, drove to school, came back at three and spent the rest of the afternoon and the evening doing homework, reading or learning. Every weekend, she went dancing with her friends, who were in her year. They enjoyed getting away from all the mundane work and had fun for just two days. Then it was always back to the same old routine. Sometimes the girl would have a little spare time, and then she’d spend it at her computer, chatting with friends, exchanging photographs with them, or she watched a funny movie on TV. Her TV was always on, running in the background, but she rarely had time to look at the screen, for her work was more important. Her family was not really a great help, either. Of course, they were trying hard, but all their well-meant advice came out wrong. For example, one day her older sister suggested that when she was reading titles from her reading list, she should just do as if she were reading them for fun, instead of thinking about it being work. Of course, it did not help, because the reading list stories were all so stupid. She could not even imagine how a person could go and write short stories. It’s like writing poems…there may be one person who enjoys reading it later, and then generations of students will be haunted by the stories, being forced to read it and answer stupid questions like: “Analyse why X is a classic hero?” or “Find five stylistic devices”. Maybe there was a secret conspiracy somewhere in the depths of the educational system, where lots of elder teachers came together, found the most boring stories and set them up on the lists. If she would not have to answer exam questions about it, she would probably not even read stories like these. She could use the time for reading something fun, like the novel she had got as a Christmas present, or finally read that paperback her sister had lent to her ages ago. Her sister was already at University, and sometimes she was jealous of her. When her sister had to get up at twelve, because she had no classes in the morning, or when her sister told her about the projects she was working on. And yet the older sister always told her that university was way less fun than school. Sometimes she could not really believe it. After all, school was so boring. And back to the short stories and poems and maths and all that stuff. But then one evening something happened when she turned on her computer. There was an e-mail from her sister. She first thought it had been sent to her by accident. After all, her sister was sitting just at the other end of the corridor and could have come over to tell her whatever she wanted to say. But when she opened the e-mail, it just said: “Hi Darling! Read the short story, please. You’ll like it. Lots of love from me.” Another short story. Her sister had to be mocking her. But she was somewhat curious about what the story her sister had sent might be, and so she opened it. And the story did come as a surprise. For there, inside the story, she was. Her life was in there.
How do you get inside a story? Well, there are several ways. First, you are very important and people just want to write about you. They want to write up your entire life, every unimportant little thing. Like when you broke your glasses playing football when you were six. Second reason you’re inside a story, and probably the one used most often, you are a fictional character. If this should apply to you, you won’t ask about it because you are nothing but someone’s imagination. And if you think you belong into that category and are a real human, then you should consider getting some counselling. Third option for getting into a story is being written into it by someone else. This means you must know someone who IS writing the story, and the problem might be that they cannot see into your mind and may misinterpret anything you do. Fourth and easiest option if you want to get into a story, go get some writing materials and write it yourself. You can do whatever you please inside your own head. And once you are inside the story, then what? Wait and see…well rather, wait and read. Anything can happen, and it’s gonna be great.
hey this is good. a story inspiring to write. :-) yes, it's true, the best way to get into a story is to write one. i do this but for me it's rather something i cannot help, because writing is for me a kind of therapy, i digest my emotions by writing them down.
I like the part where she thinks of a conspiracy of old people selecting the most boring short stories to be read. :-)
